Last night, the Senate unanimously approved the Caregiver and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010, sending the bill to the President for his signature. This bill includes provisions introduced by Senator Burr to strengthen support for family caregivers of seriously disabled veterans and establish a program of basic dental insurance coverage for veterans.

The centerpiece of the bill establishes new assistance for the family caregivers of seriously disabled veterans, including training and certification required to meet the veteran’s needs, access to ongoing support services, counseling and mental health services, respite care, medical care, and a monthly personal caregiver allowance.

Many North Carolinians have made great sacrifices to care for their injured veterans. Prior to passage of this bill, Senator Burr met with Sarah Wade of Chapel Hill, the wife and caregiver of Ted Wade, and Ed Edmundson of New Bern who, along with other family members, quit his job to take care of his son Eric. Without their families’ support, both Ted and Eric would be in nursing homes.  The personal experiences, advocacy and input of these brave people helped make this bill a success.
