Today,
the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness
Reauthorization Act of 2013 (PAHPRA), a bill introduced by Senator Burr to ensure that
America is prepared to respond to a wide range of medical and public health
emergencies.
“I am proud that the Senate has
taken this very important step to strengthen our ability to respond to medical
and public health emergencies,” Senator Burr said. “The American people
must be protected if an attack occurs, and this legislation goes a long way
towards strengthening existing programs and ensuring we are better prepared and
able to respond to threats facing our nation, whether they are naturally
occurring like an epidemic or virus or deliberate like a chemical attack.
I hope my colleagues in the House quickly pass this legislation so the
President can sign it into law as soon as possible.”
This reauthorization
legislation strengthens our nation’s preparedness for and ability to respond to
medical and public health emergencies, optimizes state and local all-hazards
preparedness and response efforts and collaboration, enhances medical
countermeasure activities, and reauthorizes key medical and public health
programs, including the BioShield Special Reserve Fund. Additional
information regarding this bill can be found here.
