Burr Applauds Senate Approval of Wild Horses Legislation

Senator Richard Burr applauded Senate approval of H.R. 126, legislation to allow for an increase in the number of wild horses on Shackleford Banks in Cape Lookout National Seashore. Originally introduced by Congressman Walter Jones (NC-3), the legislation will now head for President Bush's signature.

The legislation would amend current law, which permits 100 free roaming horses on the Banks, to allow no less than 110 free roaming horses, with a target population of between 120 to 130 free roaming horses.

"Representative Walter Jones has worked hard to increase the protection of wild horses at Shackleford Banks," said Senator Burr. "This bill will help protect the wild horses roaming throughout the area - and provide more local flexibility in deciding how to best protect these animals in the future."
